Box Break: 2009 Upper Deck A Piece of History Baseball Hobby

February 14, 2010

Yes, I picked Piece of History for my first modern box break since my return to this hobby. I’m really drawn to this set and I guess I’m one of few. I absolutely love the card design, the numbered parallels and the numbered inserts. The Historical Moments subset could have been done better but it has it’s moments (historical moments).

The 16 pack box gave me 88 of the 200 card base set if I remember correctly. I pulled 1 Hollywood relic, an auto, a jersey and a ton of serial numbered beauties.
Up above are a few of my favorite base cards. The first half of the set from #1 to #100 are star cards.
Here’s a few of the rookies I pulled. There are 50 rookies in the base from #101 to #150.
#’s 151 to 200 finish the set with the Historical Moments subset. These are some of the good ones…
…and some of the bad ones. I now own a turkey dinner trading card.
Here’s the dreaded 20th Anniversary cards. I really made out extremely well with this box. 7 of 8 were sports related and the 8th wasn’t a sheep or a virus!
Blue and green #’d parallels, and the Timeless Moments set. Check out the Lowell.. #’d 01 of 75!
Some more #’d inserts.
The auto..
The jersey..
And the Mike Meyers Goldmember costume card. I’m happy with this one.. my wife got a kick out of it. Im just glad it wasn’t a redemption..
Once again, my set needs have been posted, and since I had purchased 2 packs of this stuff before the box, I have like 2 doubles up on my for trade list!

Box Break: 1993 Action Packed All-Star Gallery Baseball, Extras For Trade!

February 5, 2010

I’ve been looking to buy a box of Action Packed for a long time now. And back in December, Kruk Cards was having a sale on some of their eBay auctions and it was 30% off of an already cheap price, so I bit! I love what I got too.

All of the Action Packed brand cards that I’ve ever seen were made the same patented way. 1 piece of card stock folded over and the ends meet in the middle of the back of the card. The player image on the front is raised, just like I’ve seen on Topps Embossed from the 1990’s. Because of the way they’re made, it’s pretty hard to find even pack fresh cards that would grade a 10. Most of them have a little foil blemish, or a bit of white showing on the black rounded edges. So keep that in mind if you’re wanting any of these.

7 cards per pack. 24 packs per box. 24-karat leaf cards randomly inserted (I pulled one). I got really close to 2 full sets. So after the 1st set and keeping 1 of each extra hall-of-famer for my hall of famer collection, that leaves me with quite a few doubles. These cards are cheap so hit me up if you want anything. I’ll even trade 1-for-1 for anything on my set needs list. Whatever. Here’s a list of what I’ve got available with the team they’re representing for you team collectors:

All from this scan are on the list above.

Here’s an example of the back. I had always thought Garvey was in the hall until just recently!

And finally, we have the 24K gold foil insert. Not too much of a difference from the base set except the card number on the back is 12″G” and the foil on the front is… pure gold! I like this one so it would be tough for me to trade it away.

Box Break: 1997 Topps Stadium Club Baseball Series 1

July 1, 2009

Having been out of touch with this hobby for something like 14 years, I guess I’m lucky to be able to go and pick up a box of 1997 Stadium Club for $11 and be thrilled as if it was a brand new set because it’s new to ME! Only 1 disappointment I came across.. I was hoping to pull a wooden Firebrand insert and when I did, it was an expired redemption for a Mark McGwire which was NOT wooden.. sure I could go on eBay and pick one up for a buck but.. bleh.

I’ll show my top 10 personal favorites:

#10

Did you know Doc ended his career with a 194-112 record?! I’m not a Yankees fan but I do remember loving it when he and Strawberry were reunited as teammates once again.

#9

Here’s Smoltzie the year after he easily won the Cy Young for having a 24-8 season with 294 K’s!

#8

Paul Molitor nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career.

#7

This card looks horrible in this scan, and really, it doesn’t look much better in person. Why would they make a card commemorating someone hitting their 50th career home run after they’ve been playing for 9 years? Why is this card my #7? Because I like Mr. Anderson and there aren’t too many inserts in this box. The Instavisions were listed at 1:36 packs! Did you know he played most of the ’97 season with a broken rib and led his pennant winning Orioles in 13 offensive categories? He led the league in hit-by-pitches too.. with a broken rib I bet that freaked him out every time.

#6

This subset had some great stars in their rookie years. They were put in 1:3 packs.

#5

Eddie is always cool with me.

#4

Jr’s ’97 season was one of his best, if not THE best. He earned an AL MVP and hit 56 HRs that year. Was he juiced? I don’t think so. I really hope and beleive Griffey’s talent was genuine. He’s always come across as real to me.

#2

These Matrix parallels look awesome and I’m glad I pulled one of a player I know and like! Odds were 1:18 packs.

#1

Darryl is my favorite player. Problems and all, I remember him as an impressive powerful hitter who really helped me fall in love with the game as a kid. He couldn’t do much in ’97 due to injuries.. and of course, that’s why the Yankees didn’t make it to the World Series that year.

I got a couple complete sets of checklist so I actually used some!

Coming soon! I’ve got a box of 1997 Best Prospects to break! 18 packs of minor leaguers turned superstars for only 6 bucks!
